Holiday Monster Writing
For our final class together before the Christmas break, students were asked to create their own holiday/Christmas monster. Before getting to work on thier own creations, students were shown several examples:
Students were able to complete the work either on their own or in small groups of two or three. Their final assignment required one to two parts (depending on how many people were in their group): 1) a drawing component, showcasing their monster; and 2) a written component, describing the monster's origins, motives, personality, etc.
Some exaples of students monsters:
Farmer Joe
Farmer Joe is a simple farmer who crops wheat and milk. But in the winter there's nothing to crop and the cows refuse to give milk. So the night before Christmas eve, if kids don't leave cheese for his grater teeth, he holds them down with his stick of wheat and shreds them t bits and they land right in his mouth.
So make sure you give him cheese if you don't want to be forgotten.
Santa/Furrr
Once upon a time, there were two best friends named Nicholas and Furrr. When they were grown up they were taking a selfie. Furrr’s fire touched Nicholas’ neck and he got burned. They were never friends again. Nicholas grew up to be a nice man and became Santa. He wore a fake beard so the burn mark wouldn’t be shown. And on the other hand, Furrr became a fire troll. One day they bumped into each other. They became stuck to each other. From then on, every Christmas eve they would go to houses and go to the children’s rooms. If it was clean, Santa would give them a gift but if it was not clean, Furrr would put more garbage in their room.
Christmas Snake
A large ugly snake. He is green on the inside and has purple spots and red eyes. It’s sparkly in the sun and matte in the dark. When you’ve been targeted, you will have a mark (+) on your left arm, which means that if you tell or show anyone you will immediately turn into stone until your next family member is targeted. And this only happens around Christmas time.
On Christmas eve, the kids waiting for Christmas to pass by, sleep to make things go faster. The snake likes to target a few kids. In the house of Suzy, everyone in her house is sleeping (including her) at around 4:30 am, the snake comes and makes a mark with her laser red eyes. Some people know his name but he’s too terrifying to mention him. The next morning Suzy notices a mark on her left arm. “Oh no”, she things to herself. “What am I gonna do? I can’t tell anyone!”
