En Masse Mural Project

In April of 2017, Montreal-based artist collective "En Masse" worked with Lake of Two Mountains students to create a multi-panel art mural for the school library. En Masse worked with students to brainstorm and execute their ideas as well as to hone their artistic skills. As the school's Visual Arts teacher, my role was to select students, obtain parental consent, and check in throughout the project to help ensure that all student participants were working together in a collaborative and helpful manner.

Here are a few photos of the process. All photos are posted with parental media consent.

Step 1: Brainstorm

Step 2: Learn and practice techniques
Step 3: Transfer designs to largescale wood panels in pencil

Students used a mixture of black indian ink and water and a variety of brushes. They practiced brush pressure, line thickness, and colour gradience before working directly on the wood panels.

Students worked in small groups with members of the En Masse teams to develop ideas and sketches. Since the mural was destined for the school's library, the theme chosen was 'Literacy'.

Step 4: Trace pencil design with ink/water mixture
