Bias, Discrimination & Prejudice

In addition to their individual final assignments, students also worked on critiquing media in class with peers. For Halloween, we watched videos from Buzzfeed and Wapikoni Mobile and students researched popular online stores like Walmart and BuyCostumes.com to assess whether any stereotypes were being reiterated (or rejected) with the costumes for sale.

During another class, students got into small groups and evaluated 4 recent news stories to determine whether they were examples of bias, discrimination, or prejudice (these terms had been previously covered). All three ERC classes commented on the same posters, which allowed students to engage with what their peers from other classes were saying. The following class was spent discussing and debriefing the news stories as a whole group.

The four posters are included below along with links to the original stories.
